It’s that time of year again! You’re cordially invited to our Michigan SLA’s Annual Meeting and Holiday Party. Come join fellow members and wander the silent auction table then feast on a delicious buffet topped off with a decadent dessert from Weber’s Inn. It’s a great way to reflect, meet the new board members, and mingle with your colleagues.

A few examples of items available at this year’s auction will be a Motawi Tile and a Family Fun pack to the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum. We’ve got tickets to Wild Swan Theater, The Henry Ford, Purple Rose Theatre, and other local venues, as well as a Trader Joe’s goody bag and other items.

And, for the first time ever, we’ll be offering the services of a photographer to take your professional headshot, so start planning your outfit and hair-do now!

We also need your help with the Silent Auction…read on!

The Holiday Party Silent Auction is back by popular demand! The auction is used to raise funds to send a student member to the SLA annual conference. In addition to items donated by local businesses for attendees to bid on, we would love to include something donated by you or your organization!

Do you have a knack for knickknacks and other arts and crafts?

Consider donating one of your works. Last year’s items included handmade jewelry and other crafts.

Want to support the travel stipend fund, but aren’t up to contributing a homemade item?

Feel free to donate an item you’ve purchased. Last year, members donated gift baskets, and previous years have seen wine and even a heated cat mat!

Or, bring your checkbook–we’ll be accepting checks at the event (or you can make arrangement to mail one in if you can’t be there in person).

If you work at an organization that makes neat stuff they’d be willing to donate or that might be willing to support the travel stipend fund directly, please consider asking them to join in on the fun, too! Last year we had a nice little gift package from Mango Languages.

Please contact Celia Ross (caross@umich.edu) if you are interested in making a donation of any kind or have any questions.

Develop your business contacts; learn more about people who are already in your network.
Speed Networking provides a structured opportunity to meet one-on-one with other people who are also looking to build and develop their networks.
As you meet each other person, you will have two minutes to introduce yourself, two minutes to learn a bit about the other person, and the opportunity to collect contact information — it’s up to you to follow up and develop connections with the people you meet. Networker Ivan Misner suggests using the one-on-one time to think in terms of how you can help the other person.

Bring:
• Business cards
• Paper for notes
• Pens
• Summary of what you do, what help you’re seeking, or one reason you’re building your network (2 minutes)
• Curiosity, enthusiasm, desire to help

Follow up:
• Note something you can do for each other person (send an article, make an introduction, suggest an organization)
• Send a message the next day to each other person, whether you have something to give or not
• Consider connecting on LinkedIn or other social media network

Speed networking is a beginning; it’s up to you what you do with that beginning.

When:
Thursday, October 25 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Join RMSLA and SLA members and guests for our upcoming Virtual Lunch, “U.S. Private Company Research: Research and Analysis,” with presenter Amelia Kassel.

Date: Thursday, September 20, 2012

Researching company information is vitally important to clients served by information professionals. Unlike public companies, U.S. private companies are not required to disclose financial information, nor are they regulated in the same way. Nevertheless, there are numerous sources for piecing together information about a private company. This webinar covers a selection of proprietary and Web-based sources, and includes tips for digging more deeply to generate those often needed results that are critical for competitive intelligence, market research, and due diligence.

Sean Campbell, Co-Owner of Cascade Insights, will be our guest speaker for the CI Division’s encore presentation of “Going Beyond Google”, on Thursday, August 9 at 1 p.m. EDT. This session is FREE to all SLA members. Sponsored by: Aurora WDC and Cascade Insights. Space is limited!

Topic: Going Beyond Google: Gathering Internet Intelligence

Knowing a competitor’s strategies, in advance, can be the difference between success and failure, and yet members of business leadership teams, marketers, and sales teams are stretched too thin just “doing their job” to spend much time really analyzing the competition. During this session we’ll show you how can make the most of open source intelligence (OSINT) assets.

Take Aways:
• 20+ free Web tools for Competitive Intelligence
• Best practices for searching the deep web
• Multiple examples of how these tools have been used in competitive intelligence projects
• Guidance as to how you should rank and prioritize open source intelligence sources.
